(1 edit)

This is a cute little romance-slice of life VN. Took me like 4 and a half hours over a few days to finish it. I thought I'd post some thoughts about it here for anyone who's curious.

Art: I've followed some of the people who contributed art to this for a while so maybe I'm a little biased but I thought the art was endearing and cute for the most part with maybe a couple exceptions.  No complaints about the look of main cast though. The backgrounds are good and all have some solid level of detail in them. The only significant complaint I have is that sometimes, due to having various artists contributing, the art-styles of different artists can clash with one another. It's nothing too serious though.

Music: Kinda hard to rate this because I think it does exactly what it wants to do. It's background music that helps set the scene. This means that nothing really 'pops' because it's not supposed to. The music made the goofy scenes sillier and the serious scenes more somber. I think they did a solid job if that's what they were looking to do. A lot of it is pretty relaxing with a slow tempo, with a couple tracks being more energetic where it's called for.

Writing: It starts off kind of rough in act 1 but it seemed to get better with every act and by the end it was doing just fine. The humor occasionally made me blow air out of my nose but some of it was pretty....eh. Every character I interacted with (and the MC) got some development and it did feel that by the ending that everyone involved had gone through some changes, as you usually do in your first year of university.
The choices were sort of meh for the most part. It seemed like a 50/50 shot if the lead up to the choice would give me enough context clues to figure out the 'right' answer or not. And a lot of the choices didn't seem to matter at all. Maybe that was the point? Or maybe I'm just socially inept. This is kind of an issue with every VN that had ever had choices though so I don't know that it takes away that much.

I have to give credit to the writers for the ending. Without any spoilers I thought it was refreshing for a VN of this type and I liked it a lot.

There were also a few typos I caught, no more than like 5 or so. I didn't experience any glitches or anything but in one scene there was a doubling of a text line where it appeared twice one right after the other.

This VN has been heavily influenced by the well-known Katawa Shoujo and I think it strikes at similar but parallel chords. It's laid back enough that you can kind of just take it easy while you read it but when it shifts into the conflict that you know has to come it does so in a way that I think is very natural and a decent reflection of how things sometimes go in real life. All in all if you're bored and want a cute lil' VN to read I'd say give Eisai a go.

Hey thanks a lot for the update! I managed to beat the final level on this save at last.

Hey thanks for the reply and update. It loaded fine. I went and found my old self and the ghost to the north and the game froze up in the same way again when they came into view. Was able to take a screenshot this time.

The @ of course is my character (possessing a statue) and the flower to the bottom left of the @ is the square with the other possession ghost when I hover over that square. Of note I think is that the tooltip when I hover over the ghost says that the ghost is dead. I thought I had killed it when the game initially froze up so it may have to do with some sort of end sequence if I had to guess.

And just for clarity's sake it is the exact same type of soft crash as before. No error screen just this screen in game with no mouse or keyboard inputs doing anything except for clicking the menu in the top left and clicking menu buttons. And hovering over stuff with the mouse still shows a tooltip.

Made it to the surface for the first time and the game froze up while fighting the other possession ghost. No keyboard inputs did anything and clicking on anything except the menu in the top left with the mouse did nothing. Because i could get the menu open I saved and quit to see if reloading it would fix it. When I did I got this error on the crash screen:

Error

output.lua:644: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'x' (a nil value)

Traceback

output.lua:644: in function 'set_camera'

saveload.lua:44: in function 'load_game'

gamestates/loadsaves.lua:307: in function 'mousepressed'

main.lua:126: in function <main.lua:125>

[C]: in function 'xpcall'

The save won't load no matter what and I'm guessing it's unsalvageable but i thought I'd post about the crash regardless.
